About the Tar River Civic Club

The Tar River Civic Club (“TRCC”) meets every Wednesday at 1:00 p.m.. There are approximately 50 members with a large attendance at our weekly meetings. Lunch is buffet style and after appropriate time for lunch, the program usually starts with introduction of guests and announcements at 1:30 pm. There is a weekly speaker or program, which lasts approximately 30 minutes and we adjourn promptly by 2:00 pm. You do not have to be a member to attend a lunch so join us anytime and see if our club is right for you.

TRCC is a non-profit membership organization dedicated to helping the children and youth of the greater Rocky Mount area. We have two fund raising events annually. One is our Annual Reverse Raffle and Silent Auction held in the Spring of each year at Rose Hill Conference Center in Nashville North Carolina. Our primary benefactor of this fund raiser is Communities In Schools. The second is our annual Benefit the Children Golf Tournament. We donate in excess of $15,000.00 each year to local children’s charities including but not limited to Communities in Schools, Boys and Girls Club of Nash/Edgecombe Counties, Boy and Girl Scouts, Association of Learning Disabled & Handicapped Children; Fairview Early Childhood Development Center, Christian Fellowship Home, Nash/Rocky Mount Schools, Edgecombe County Schools, Nash Community College, Rocky Mount Youth Baseball, Williford Family Resource Center, Salvation Army, American Red Cross and the Harrison Family YMCA.

Club History

The Tar River Civic Club originated as the Tar River Kiwanis. In 2005, the Club decided to end its relationship with Kiwanis International so that it could more efficiently focus on improving the lives of children in our local community. The original Kiwanis Club began in 1979 with twenty Charter Members. Jim Brown, Reid Rhodes, and Vince Durham were the three men responsible for organizing the club. Jim and Reid had been members of the Nat Green Kiwanis Club in Greensboro and felt that Rocky Mount needed a similar organization. The Club met at the Carleton House Restaurant, which is now part of Wesleyan College, in downtown Rocky Mount. Their first fundraiser was a Putt-Putt tournament followed by a pig pickin.

Statement of Purpose

Primarily, our goal is to offer our members an environment in which they can help improve the lives of children in our local community by donating money and time to local programs which provide educational and/or recreational opportunities and life resources for children and to enable all young people, especially those less fortunate, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.

Secondarily, our goal is to network with each other and our counterparts in the business community to improve business development of our own businesses and those in the greater Rocky Mount area and increase community involvement of our membership.
